| The Royal
Chitwan National Park covers an area of
approximately 1040 square kilometers and is
situated at an altitude of between 150 to 760 m.
It is situated mainly in an alluvial flood plain
with the remainder being covered with deciduous
forest dominated by the huge Sal or Hardwood
trees. |
| The park was
once an exclusive hunting ground for the kings of
Nepal but today a sanctuary dedicated to preserve
and protect Nepal's wildlife. Chitwan is one of
Asias most spectacular and abundant
sanctuary offering game viewing activities by
canoe, 4 wheel drive vehicle, on foot and on the
back of Asian elephant. |
| There
is a large variety of wildlife to observe,
including such rare species as the one horned
rhinoceros, gaur (worlds largest cattle),
sloth bear, four species of deer, langur, rhesus
monkeys and the elusive royal bengal tiger. The
rivers are home to gharial and mugger crocodiles
and the fast disappearing freshwater dolphin. In
addition, over 400 species of birds can be
viewed. So, it truly is a paradise for nature and
wildlife lovers as well as people with general
curiosity. |
